Embrace cardamom, brown sugar, and minimalism at this new hotspot on Ventura Blvd. Studio City just gained a new addition to its ever-evolving landscape. Yala is a chic café inspired by Middle Eastern coffee culture. This elegant space is the result of two creatives with a passion for flavor. Although this is Zain and Marissa Shammas’ first foray into the culinary space, they are already making waves with their innovative recipes and modern menu. Yala is located at 11824 Ventura Blvd, Studio City.

The name Yala is derived from the word “Yallah,” which is used like the phrase “Let’s Go!” in several Middle-Eastern countries. This playful name is a reflection of Zain Shammas’ roots, as well as a way to make other immigrants feel welcome. The unique spelling hints at the LA twist on the traditional Middle Eastern and Mediterranean recipes. For example, one of their top menu items is the “Everything Bagel Za’atar Cheese Danish.”

There is nothing quite like Yala in LA, with its contemporary take on traditional techniques. The most notable beverage is the “sand coffee,” also known as “Turkish coffee” or “Greek coffee” in certain regions. It is typically made on the street in a metal pot, which is partially submerged in hot sand. The flavor is unique due to the gradual cooking process, as the hot sand never allows it to come to a boil. Yala has adjusted this method to suit the modern atmosphere, while still using sand in the brewing process

At Yala, it’s clear that every sip is meant to be savored. The tranquil, minimalist atmosphere immediately sets the tone for a mindful tasting experience. Their hot “Evil Eye” coffee, brewed using hot sand of course, is topped with cardamom cream and a raw sugar rim. While Ventura Blvd. is no stranger to trendy new openings, there is something distinctly authentic about Yala. If you’re craving an original experience with all of the coolness of an LA café, Yala is right up your alley.

Yala is open from 8am-3pm every day of the week.
