San Diego-based gym franchise Chuze Fitness will soon open a new 44,000-square-foot location in North Long Beach. The new gym, located at 2185 East South Street, is the 22nd location for the franchise in Southern California.
Chuze Fitness, known for its affordable gym memberships and immersive movie theater workout spaces, opened its newest franchise on July 31. Amenities at the fitness club include a dedicated strength training area, heated fitness classes, a traditional sauna, indoor turf training space and an on-site smoothie bar.
Chuze Fitness’ new location is adjacent to El Super grocery store, which opened in May. The retail center was home to Food 4 Less, which closed in 2021.
The new gym is located just off Cherry Avenue, near Bret Harte Elementary School, and is also near Atlantic Avenue and State Route 91.
A 2023 report in the Long Beach Business Journal said the location is expected to create approximately 30 new jobs. That report also noted that the Long Beach Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit in March of the same year.
The location is the 59th franchise for Chuze Fitness. A report in WhatNow Los Angeles says the franchise has two existing locations in Cudahy and Temple City.
Although most of its franchises are in California, the gym has locations in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Georgia and Florida. In 2023, Chuze Fitness acquired Jacksonville, Florida-based Bailey’s Health & Fitness.
The gym’s website shows another franchise is in the works in Santa Fe Springs at 13332 Telegraph Road. That franchise, according to the report in WhatNow Los Angeles, is expected to open in 2027.
While the area around Atlantic Avenue in North Long Beach has seen investment in housing and retail, the area around the new gym has seen a wave of investment in industrial.
Real estate firm Link Logistics, a subsidiary of Blackstone Group, was approved by the Long Beach Planning Commission for a new 300,000-square-foot warehouse at 5910 Cherry Avenue, next to the new gym. A July 2024 report in the Long Beach Post says the planning commission approved the facility. However, Link Logistics drew pushback from the local community over concerns about air quality, traffic and noise.
A listing in LoopNet.com shows the industrial space, known as the Cherry Logistics Center, includes 10,000 square feet of office space. The facility spans a combined 304,344 square feet.
A July market report from real estate firm Lee & Associates reported that defense firm Divergent Technologies leased 430,000 square feet at the industrial park at 2400 E Artesia Boulevard, less than two miles north of the gym. That lease is part of an investment that could support up to 1,000 manufacturing jobs in Long Beach, according to a press release from the defense firm.
Amazon leased half a million square feet three miles south of the new gym at 2401 E Wardlow Road.
