The founders of the brand-new Loto café in Echo Park know that not everyone in LA is lucky enough to have a sunny backyard terrace. That’s why they turned their bungalow garden into a neighborhood coffee shop. A communal atmosphere with organic curation, it feels less like a coffee shop and more like a private party — where everyone is invited. Tucked into a residential corner of Echo Park, the café feels like a little escape from the pace of the city.
Loto was founded by Julian, a self-professed “coffee guy” who seeks to blend the magic of Mexican coffee with Japanese minimalism. He had an apprenticeship under chef Lucho Martinez at Café Tormenta in Mexico City, an experience that helped shape the coffee program at Loto. It’s also where their coffee is sourced, bringing a taste of Mexico City to the neighborhood. The result is a café that feels personal, thoughtful, and rooted in several cultures.
They offer lactose-free milk, and Julian’s favorite beverage is a lactose-free Altura cortado in one of their signature ceramic mugs. Hot beverages aren’t the only option, with their sparkling signature coffee drink “La Tormenta.” They also offer Kettl Matcha for a Japanese touch. Each drink fits naturally into the laid-back setting, whether you’re settling in with a handmade mug or stopping by for something bright and refreshing.
The garden was landscaped by Whitney Thomas Schield, who curated an outdoor space that somehow looks both wild and refined. Herbs, native plants, gravel, and white stucco make it feel like a sustainable oasis in the desert. There are currently no laptops allowed, as the space is meant for sipping the artisanal beverages and connecting with your neighbor. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to slow down, stay awhile, and actually take in your surroundings.
Enter through the front gate and follow the side of the house until you reach the back window. That’s where you’ll place your order. If you’re craving a warm morning with friends in a beautiful Echo Park backyard, this café is right up your alley.
For now, their hours are Wednesday through Friday, 8:30am to 1:30pm.
