Erewhon Expands to Manhattan Beach: South Bay’s First Store Is Coming Soon

An iconic LA grocery store is expanding their footprint, and they’re finally about to set up shop in the South Bay, as Erewhon will be opening in Manhattan Beach.

Earlier this year, Manhattan Beach locals mourned the loss of their Mother’s Market at 1700 Rosecrans Avenue (between Redondo Avenue and Aviation Boulevard). Fortunately, this storefront likely won’t remain closed for long. Rather, another boutique grocery store mini-chain posted on Instagram over Labor Day weekend that they’ll soon move to the neighborhood.

If you’re in any way plugged into the heirloom natural foods scene, or even if you just keep up with celebrity news, then you’ve probably already heard about Erewhon. Though Michio and Aveline Kushi originally opened Erewhon in Boston in 1966, they soon uprooted and moved their business (along with the rest of their lives) to Los Angeles. An employee named Tom DeSilva then bought Erewhon in 1979, and he proceeded to grow the store’s reputation as LA’s #1 go-to store for fresh, whole, and healthy foods.

As new investors began to take over in 2011, Erewhon took advantage of Angelenos’ growing cravings for upscale groceries, and they began to open new stores across LA County. And as health-conscious celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kendall Jenner, and Sabrina Carpenter were increasingly singing Erewhon’s praises, this store eventually became the place to see and be seen… And, of course, to indulge in unique smoothies, stock up on heirloom organic berries, and try their famed bone broths that you won’t find anywhere else.

Though Erewhon has gradually expanded their presence in LA, this Manhattan Beach store will be their first south of LAX. They currently operate stores in Pasadena, Silver Lake, the Grove, Studio City, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Culver City, and Venice. A Glendale location is also coming soon.

Erewhon has yet to announce a specific opening date for their new Manhattan Beach store, so we’ll keep an eye out here and keep you updated on future developments.
