From Berlin to California: Concierge Coffee Hits DTLA

It’s no secret that Berlin is known for its electronic music scene, something LA is traditionally lacking. Concierge Coffee may be an integral step to bring techno to DTLA – with a side of oat milk. This German coffee shop started in Berlin and recently opened its first US location in the heart of the Arts District. Located at 821 Traction Avenue, this sleek, creative café is a part of the ever-evolving landscape of Downtown Los Angeles

Concierge Coffee was founded by Benjamin Pates and Namdar Nosratifard in 2013. Not only does it incorporate brutalist architectural elements inspired by East Berlin, but it also plays soft, experimental techno tunes. From the moment you walk in, it’s clear that Concierge is more than a coffee shop – it’s an immersive experience. However, unlike the tourist-focused, “immersive” exhibitions that often pop up throughout LA with unimpressive reviews, Concierge Coffee is a truly chic escape from the hustle and bustle.

The location of Concierge Coffee is as revolutionary as the café itself. The collection of shops is called “SIGNAL” – an appropriately minimalist title. Although it is undoubtedly an upscale destination, there is an understated elegance. Downtown LA was in the middle of a striking transformation before COVID-19, and the pandemic brought an element of uncertainty regarding where the neighborhood was headed. SIGNAL is proof that luxury brands still see DTLA as a hotspot for high-end shopping and dining.

Concierge Coffee presents a self-aware take on the hipster café. While it has all of the elements of its oat-based, matcha latte-serving competitors, there’s something authentic about its approach. The concrete design and stylishly solemn environment invites guests to immerse themselves in a subtly ironic coffee experience.

Aside from its notable decor, the coffee is simply great. It’s slightly acidic with a rich, roasted flavor. Coffee snobs will be pleased and everyday sippers will be more than satisfied. For tea lovers, the matcha is strong and pure. They also experiment with specialty drinks, such as their Hojicha Latte. Concierge offers typical LA prices, and their frequent line is proof that Angelenos are eager to try the curated menu.

Open from 8 am to 4 pm every day, Concierge Coffee is a must-visit café for tourists and locals alike.
