Tacos 1986 is a homegrown Tijuana-style Mexican restaurant that’s recently drawn nationwide acclaim for their tasty tacos and will soon turn up the heat in Sherman Oaks.

Originally launched as a food cart in Hollywood in 2018, Tacos 1986 has since taken LA by storm. Once food bloggers and restaurant critics from near and far began to discover this taco cart and sing their praises, Chef Jorge “Joy” Umberto Alvarez-Tostado and co-founder Victor Delgado expanded to a full-service brick-and-mortar restaurant in 2019.

They’ve continued to expand since then, and they continue to draw praise for their down-home commitment to serving their local and loyal fans, even as they’ve become one of LA’s hottest culinary stars.

Though LA is well-known for having taquerias all over town, what makes Tacos 1986 different is Chef Alvarez-Tostado’s unique ability to translate his passion for Tijuana-style street food into fresh creations that are made with flair and abound in flavor.

Not only does Tacos 1986 specialize in traditional Baja California street fare like carne asada (grilled steak) and adobada (marinated pork) tacos, but also vegan mushroom tacos, (meaty and meatless) quesadillas, burritos, bowls, and much more.

Yet since Tacos 1986 remains quite affordable, with many menu options under $10, it continues to thrive as a LA locals’ favorite.

Tacos 1986 currently has locations in Downtown LA, Pasadena, Burbank, Beverly Grove, Westwood, and Santa Monica. And though they’ve sparked speculation of possible nationwide or international expansion in the future, they’re currently focused on launching their seventh taqueria in Sherman Oaks.

Their new location is at 15030 Ventura Boulevard, a shopping center by Noble Avenue that already houses local favorites like Kai Ramen, Borekas Sephardic Pastries, and The Harvest Bar.

We don’t yet have a specific opening date for Tacos 1986’s new Valley restaurant, but they have recently declared on their official Instagram page that it’s set to open in September, and they teased another “progress report” in their Instagram stories this week.

Stay tuned, as we will provide updates as we get more details on Tacos 1986’s upcoming arrival in Sherman Oaks.
