Hollywoodland, now known as Beachwood Canyon, was developed in 1923 by Tracy E. Shoults and Sidney H. Woodruff. They envisioned a utopian community in the hills where retirees and artists could escape. Despite some believing the name “Wolf’s Lair” comes from the wolf’s head placard on the front gate, it is actually named after L. Milton Wolf. This chateau is one of the finest standing representations of Hollywoodland’s original charm and vision.

“Wolf’s Lair” is a walled and gated replica of chateaus found in Normandy, France. The design style was popular in Beachwood Canyon, where homes originally adhered to one of four architectural styles: French Normandy, Tudor English, Mediterranean, or Spanish. Adding to its historical importance, “Wolf’s Lair” was built using granite quarried from nearby Bronson Canyon.

The main residence is complemented by a guest house that is an architectural gem in its own right. In the 1960s, iconic modernist architect John Lautner redesigned the guest house. Its exterior belies the mid-century marvel that is the interior, which features wood-beamed ceilings and wall-to-wall windows, creating a stunning and unique space.
